Inspired by dancing on the telly
Come on in? Not on your Nelly!
Where?
Roquaine Court (Strictly no entry)
BBC's Strictly Come Dancing is one of the few TV shows whose name has been truncated to a single word, yet without risk of confusion. Search for "Strictly" and every one of Google's first
page results relate to the TV show. The word has since come back into popular usage
(who used "strictly" other than headteachers before the hit phenomenon?) and been adopted for all sorts of other uses; even the Swanage Railway had a "Strictly Bulleid" event a couple
of years ago, when most of the locos at the gala were designed by Oliver Bulleid - but see
clue 23 for more!
And
Nelly? (Sometimes spelled Nellie) ... There's no definitive answer on this, but it seems to come from "Not on your Nelly Duff" which is Cockney rhyming slang for "Not on your puff";
i.e. "not on your life". Trying to find who Nelly Duff actually was pretty much draws a blank, other than a general consensus that she never existed. Searching is complicated by the presence
of a very successful and popular art gallery named the "Nelly Duff" after the Nelly in the clue.
Anyway, don't go there. Just don't.
